So, you are going to Great Britain. You can do it either by plane or by sea because the island is separated from Europe by the English Channel. It is the English Channel you need to cross to get to the British Isles. What do you know about it? Here is a short text about The English Channel.

The English Channel is only twenty miles across, but it presents a challenge even to the strongest swimmers. There is a strong tide running up the Channel from the south, and another coming down from the north. These two tidal movements meet near the mouth of the Thames river, creating such strong currents that it is impossible to swim in a straight line across the Channel. To escape the currents, swimmers must go around them either to the north or the south; the distance is more than doubled by this manoeuvre.
The first man to succeed in swimming the Channel was Captain Webb, who landed in France twenty-one hours and forty-five minutes after entering the water at Dover. Other attempts have also been successful, some in much less time.
It must be mentioned that the sea in the Channel is usually cold, and swimmers must cover their bodies with grease to protect their bodies. They are fed by men who accompany them in small boats

Ла-Манш образовался относительно недавно по геологическим меркам: всего 200 тысяч лет назад. В те времена в районе Северного моря было озеро, ограниченное ледником. Воды озера прорвались из-за ледника и вызвали огромное наводнение, в результате которого перешеек между современными Великобританией и Францией был смыт.
Ла-Манш имел важную защитную функцию для Британии. Хотя ширина пролива небольшая, и его можно было преодолеть даже на древних кораблях (до островов доплывали и римляне, и норманы, и Вильгельм Оранский), путешествие это было довольно сложным. Сильные течения, приливы, шквалистые ветра, густые туманы погубили многие корабли.
Опытные пловцы могут преодолеть Па-де-Кале вплавь. Первым, кто переплыл пролив без спасательного жилета, был британец Мэттью Уэбб, которому понадобилось почти 22 часа. Рекорд по времени поставил австралийский пловец Трент Гримси в 2007 году – всего 7 часов. Удивительно то, что за всю историю пролив переплыло меньше человек, чем покорило Эверест: всего около тысячи людей.
Из-за течений и погоды температура воды в Ла-Манше не поднимается выше 18 градусов даже летом, а обычно в теплые месяцы держится в районе 15-16 градусов. При этом зимой пролив не замерзает – даже у берегов не образуется лед. Это объясняется теплым течением Гольфстрим.
Под Па-де-Кале построен Евротоннель, который соединяет Великобританию и Францию – города Дувр и Кале. Его длина составляет 51 километр, 39 из которых лежат под водой. Это третий по длине железнодорожный тоннель в мире. Его даже включили в список современных чудес света.
