Что вы знаете о глаголе KEEP?
Я получил письмо, ответ на которое, как мне кажется, будет интересен многим.
Антон, добрый вечер. Обратила внимание, что в Лондоне на рекламных проспектах, метро, указателях и много где еще используется глагол «Keep». У этого глагола такое широкое значение? Мне не всегда удается его перевести в контексте.
Например:
Отличный вопрос, много примеров. Посмотрите на них внимательно, пожалуйста. Сколько из них вам понятно? Прикиньте примерно, а потом читайте дальше.
Сам глагол keep имеет три основных значения. Он может значить:
1) Оставить себе. Причем русское слово «себе» уже входит в состав «keep». Поэтому «Можешь оставить себе эту маечку» будет просто «You can keep this t-shirt» (а не «You can keep yourself this t-shirt»)
Еще пример: At most hotels you can keep the shampoo but you can’t keep the towels. – В большинстве гостиниц можно оставить себе шампунь, а полотенце – нельзя.
2) Держать – в смысле содержать. В этом значении после «keep» часто нужно прилагательное – если мы хотим показать, в каком именно состоянии нужно что-нибудь содержать.
Например: Please keep your room tidy. – Пожалуйста, держи комнату в чистоте.
Еще пример: This fireplace is so beautiful. It also keeps the house warm. – Этот камин такой красивый. А еще он отапливает дом (буквально: «содержит дом теплым»).
3) Продолжать. Да-да, «keep» может быть отличным синонимом слова «continue».
Пожалуйста, помните: после «keep» глагол должен стоять в -ing’овой форме. Почему? А потому что русский скажет: «Жена, продолжай жарить мясо», а англичанин скажет: «Жена, продолжай жарение мяса». Русский скажет: «Вовочка, продолжай красить мех», а англичанин скажет: «Бобби, продолжай крашение меха». А как известно, чтобы из глагола сделать существительное («жарение», «крашение», и т.д.), нужно этот глагол поставить в -ing’овую форму. Поэтому:
«Bobby, keep painting the fur».
И еще: в этом значении вместо «keep» почти всегда можно сказать «keep on». То есть примеры выше можно легко заменить на «Hey wife, keep on roasting the meat» и «Bobby, keep on painting the fur».
