Глаголы See, Watch, Look часто путают, т.к. они все связаны со зрением, но употребляются по-разному. Поэтому, чтобы правильно выразить свою мысль, необходимо четко понимать различия между ними.
See
Как только мы открываем глаза, мы начинаем видеть – see, это естественный процесс, мы не прилагаем к этому специальных усилий. Когда мы видим что-то хорошо или плохо из-за проблем со зрением, освещением, какими-то помехами, мы также употребляем глагол see. Часто в таких случаях употребляется модальный глагол can (could), который не переводится:
Если мы увидели кого-то или увиделись с кем-то, мы также употребим see

Look
В отличие от глагола “see”, в случае с look мы прилагаем усилия, чтобы посмотреть – нужно повернуть голову, присмотреться, поднять глаза и т.д.

Глаголы look at, see и watch, несмотря на то, что имеют разные значения и употребляются в разных ситуациях, при этом имеют и схожее значение «смотреть». Посмотрим, в чём же различие (а оно есть и весьма заметное) в употреблении данных глаголов в одном и том же значении.
Итак, смотреть можно по-разному.
Look at
Look at — смотреть / посмотреть на что-то или кого-то, намеренно направлять свой взгляд на какой-либо объект, чтобы увидеть его. Как правило, такой объект внимания — это что-то статичное, то, что не является процессом:
He looked at his watch. — Он посмотрел на часы.
She looked at him with her eyes full of tears. — Она посмотрела на него глазами, полными слёз.
If you look carefully, you will recognize him. — Если вы посмотрите внимательно, вы узнаете его.
He spent two hours looking at his new painting. — Он провёл два часа, смотря (глядя) на его новую картину.
Look at me! — Посмотри на меня!
Look at the picture. — Посмотри на картинку.
Соответственно, если просто «смотреть», то look употребляется без предлога:
Если после глагола look идёт вопросительное слово, то предлог at чаще всего опускается. Например:

Если говорить о глаголе look, то это «активный» глагол, так как мы намеренно, с определенной целью смотрим на что-то. А вот see — это в большей степени «пассивный» глагол, потому что see означает «видеть какие-либо объекты, которые попадают в поле зрения, и осознавать, что видишь». В случае с глаголом see, мы видим что-то, что попалось нам на глаза, как правило, не прикладывая для этого специальных усилий. Просто видим и всё))
I saw his new car yesterday. — Я видела его новую машину вчера.
We saw nothing in the dark. — Мы ничего не видели в темноте.

Разницу между see и look можно хорошо увидеть на примере следующих предложений:
Suddenly she saw him. — Вдруг она увидела его. (просто увидела, например, среди приближающихся к ней друзей)
Suddenly she looked at him. — Вдруг она посмотрела на него. (неожиданно для остальных, она посмотрела на него, то есть намеренно направила свой взгляд, и, конечно, все это заметили)
I looked at the photo, but I didn’t see anybody I knew. — Я посмотрела на фотографию, но не увидела никого, кого знала.
В этом своём значении «видеть» see, как правило, не употребляется в длительных (Continuous) временах. Поэтому, если вы хотите сказать, что видите в момент речи, используйте can see (могу видеть). При переводе на русский язык can чаще всего опускается.

Что касается watch, то этот глагол очень близок по смыслу к look, но со своими нюансами. Watch означает «смотреть на что-то в течение какого-либо времени», причём это «что-то» — действие в развитии, процесс, за которым мы наблюдаем.
She likes to sit at the window and watch what’s happening outside. — Она любит сидеть у окна и смотреть, что происходит на улице. (то есть сидеть и наблюдать за происходящим)
He watches television every evening. — Он смотрит телевизор каждый вечер. (по сути, смотреть телевизор — это следить за тем, что происходит на экране)
Давайте посмотрим, чем отличаются друг от друга предложения с глаголами watch и see:
We watched the kids playing in the yard. — Мы смотрели, как дети играют во дворе. (использование глагола watch позволяет сделать акцент на том, что это процесс «мы смотрели (наблюдали) в течение какого-то времени, как дети играют во дворе»)
We saw the kids playing in the yard. — Мы видели детей, играющих во дворе. (употребление глагола see подразумевает в большей степени законченное событие. See также не предполагает, что мы потратили много времени, наблюдая за чем-то; мы просто видели, что дети играют, и всё. Скорее всего мы даже не сможем сказать, что именно они делали или что это была за игра)
Watch or see for movies, concerts, TV
Еще один интересный момент, который касается глаголов watch и see.
Когда речь идёт именно о выражении «смотреть телевизор» (то есть передачи, которые показывают по телевизору), то употребляется только watch:
watch television / TV — смотреть телевизор (нельзя сказать! see television )
Если мы говорим о фильмах или программах, которые смотрим по телевизору, то может использоваться как watch, так и see:
We watched / saw a great film on TV yesterday. — Вчера мы посмотрели замечательный фильм по телевизору.
Хотя в этом случае и возможно употребление обоих глаголов, всё-таки, если мы говорим о фильме или программе, которые уже посмотрели или не посмотрели (то есть используем прошедшее время), то предпочтительнее использовать глагол see. Ведь watch — это в большей степени процесс, а see подразумевает своего рода результат / факт. Но, опять же, напомню, что допустимо употребление как watch, так и see. Кстати, например, если нужно просто спросить Ты смотрел когда-нибудь этот фильм?, то в этом случае лучше употребить see, так как нас опять же интересует результат: Have you ever seen this film? А вот если речь идёт о настоящем длительном времени, то здесь уместнее watch (собственно, see в значение «видеть / смотреть» не употребляется в длительных временах).
Ещё одно отличие
Когда же речь идет о просмотре фильмов, пьес, каких-то представлений, спортивных матчей вне дома (например, в кинотеатре), то используется глагол see. То есть просмотр фильма или пьесы в кино воспринимается как своего рода «событие», отсюда и see.
We saw a great film yesterday. You’ll have to go and see it while it’s in the cinema. — Мы посмотрели замечательный фильм вчера. Вам нужно сходить и посмотреть его, пока он идёт в кинотеатре.
Следовательно, есть и такое отличие между see и watch:
We’re going to see a movie at the cinema tonight. (see, когда мы смотрим что-то на публике)
We’re going to watch a movie on TV tonight. (watch, когда мы смотрим что-то дома)
Но обратите внимание: если, например, вам позвонили и спрашивают What are you doing?, а вы в этом момент находитесь непосредственно в кинотеатре и смотрите фильм, то, конечно, следует сказать I’m watching the film, так как необходимо подчеркнуть процесс. Тем более, что see в этом значении в Continuous не употребляется.
На первый взгляд, может показаться, что всё это очень сложно, но это лишь некоторые нюансы, которые нужно знать, чтобы правильно употреблять глаголы look at, watch и see.
