Strait of Dover, French Pas de Calais, Latin Gallicum Fretum, narrow water passage separating England (northwest) from France (southeast) and connecting the English Channel (southwest) with the North Sea (northeast). The strait is 18 to 25 miles (30 to 40 km) wide, and its depth ranges from 120 to 180 feet (35 to 55 metres). Until the comparatively recent geologic past (c. 5000 bce ), the strait was an exposed river valley, thus making England an extension of the European continent. Because of the prevailing winds, the main flow of water through the strait is from the southwest, but a persistent northeast wind can reverse the current. The white cliffs on the British side, composed of soft chalk, are receding because of erosion. Although the strait is one of the world’s busiest seaways, a strict system of traffic lanes and navigation information became mandatory only in 1977.
The chief ports along the strait include Dover and Folkestone (England) and Calais and Boulogne (France). The idea of a rail tunnel across the bottom of the strait was first proposed in 1856. However, such a project was not undertaken for another 130 years. Constructed between 1987 and 1991 and officially opened in 1994, the Channel Tunnel is now a major transportation link between the two countries. High-speed ferries also operate across the strait.

Древняя столица племени атребатов, до 12 в. город принадлежавшая графам Фландрским, и прославился своими коврами. В городе сохранились римские укрепления, цитадель (бывшая штаб-квартира Тюренна). Собор (1773—1883 гг.) ранее предназначался для аббатства. Бывшее аббатство Сен-Ва (Saint-Vaast) — очень красивый ансамбль с двумя внутренними галереями. В настоящее время там размещаются библиотека и Музей изобразительных искусств (средневековая скульптура, живопись 17 в., а также фарфор и археологические находки). В городе множество домов в типично фламандском стиле. От здания ратуши с часовой башней начинается цепь подземных ходов, пронизывающих центр города.

В Кале старинное производство кружев, тюля, вышивок. Уже в 14 в. являлся важным торговым портом. С именем города связано историческое событие времен короля Эдуарда III: чтобы избежать гибели жителей, группа «граждан Кале», возглавляемая Эсташем де Сен-Пьером, вынесла английскому королю ключи от города. Созданная в 1895 г. на эту тему скульптурная композиция Родена выставлена в Кале. С середины 14 по середину 16 в. городом владели англичане. Городская цитадель была укреплена Вобаном, но сохранила лишь детали прежних укреплений — руины двух башен. Цитадель сильно пострадала во время войны 1939—1945 гг. и потому подверглась реконструкции. Следует посмотреть башню Ге (Guet) 13 в., церковь Нотр-Дам 13—16 вв. и музей изящных искусств и Дентель (Dentelle).
Булонь (Булонь-сюр-Мер) (Boulogne-sur-Mer, 50 тыс. жителей), город и порт на западе Франции, у пролива Па-де-Кале. Пассажирское сообщение с Дувром и Фолкстоном (Великобритания). Булонь дает четверть национального улова рыбы. Цитадель 13 в. построена сыном Филиппа-Августа. Стоит посетить дворец-музей графов Булонских и колокольню 12 в. — часть донжона бывшего замка.
Рыболовецкий порт Этапль (Etaples), прошедший через многочисленные войны. Среди местных достопримечательностей музей Квентовик (Quentovic), Отель-де-Виль (Hotel de Ville) и «Дом Фауны и Флоры» (Maison de la Faune et de la Flore). Природоохранный заповедник Бэ-де-ла-Канш (de la Baie de la Canche) занимает территорию площадью в 500 га, где произрастают 420 видов растений, из которых 80 весьма редких.
Монтрейль-сюр-Мер (Montreuil-sur-Mer) — весьма популярный курорт. Цитадель 10 в. неоднократно перестраивалась (в 12, 14 и 16 вв.). Сохранились башни Рейн-Берт и Бланш (de la reine Berthe и de Blanche). Великолепная панорама, открывающаяся во время прогулки по остаткам укреплений, в свое время так потрясла Виктора Гюго, что он перенес сюда действие одного из эпизодов «Отверженных». В часовне бывшего сиротского дома располагается музей города.
Городок Сент-Омер (Saint-Omer), погруженный в гущу современной жизни, бережно хранит историческое наследие. Из памятников старины особенно интересны средневековые дома на Гран-Пляс (Grand-Place), готическая базилика Нотр-Дам (13—16 вв.), практически сохранившая первоначальный вид. В Отель-Санделен (Hotel Sandelin, 1776 г.) размещается музей изящных искусств, экспонирующий старинную мебель, гобелены, изделия из слоновой кости, картины, керамику и фаянс Севера и Дельфта, весьма ценную церковную утварь и оригинальную коллекцию трубок — 2 тыс. штук. Музей Анри-Депюи (Henri-Dupuis) располагается в частном доме 18 в.
Роскошный курорт Ле Туке («Парижский Пляж») (Le Touquet-Paris-Plage), расположенный на так называемом «Опаловом берегу» с великолепным пляжем и прославленным мототреком Л»Эндуро (l»Enduro). Роскошь скрытая и по-английски неброская, незаметная для любопытных глаз окружающих. В музее Туке (du Touquet) демонстрируется собрание картин «этапльской школы», а также работы современных художников (Ликатa, Ван Хеке). В Пале-де-Люроп (Palais de l»Europe) размещается музей кукол, где при помощи игрушек различных эпох рассказывается об истории города и региона вплоть до наших дней.
