Что такое resolume wire

Welcome to Wire!

We’re so excited to finally introduce you to our new addition to the Resolume family, say hello to Wire!

Wire is a modular node-based patching environment to create effects, mixers and video generators for Arena & Avenue.

Why?
Does the world really need another patching environment? Yes, we think it does. There are some truly great patching environments available; Max, Notch, TouchDesigner, vvvv, Vuo, to name just a few. All of these have been around for decades and all have their own purpose, strengths and weaknesses. However none of them tick all our boxes. We want something lightweight, embeddable, cross-platform and most of all, easy to use and learn. That patching environment did not exist yet, and since the days of Quartz Composer we have been frustrated and dreaming about a patching environment that would compliment Arena and Avenue.

Of course Wire can not be compared to patching environments that have been around for decades but it does already prove itself very useful in expanding the capabilities of Arena & Avenue. In fact, you might have already been using Wire effects and generators without even noticing. Remember the Abstract Field source and Acuarela & Tilt Shift effects we added to Arena and Avenue a few versions back? Those are made in Wire! And the best thing is; you can now edit them and make your own variations. Or learn how they were made and create something entirely new.

The Future?
We think we have laid the foundation for a very friendly and capable environment that will only get better over time. We look forward to expanding into new territories in the future like audio playback, synthesis and effects. 3D rendering. More IO protocols. Online content. To name just a few. There is so much fun stuff that can be added to Wire it’s hard to decide what to do first. Help us prioritize what to do next, by telling us what you would like to be added in the future.

Help!
Wire includes a lot of example patches that get you going very quickly. The welcome screen will help you to get started right away. For every node there is a documentation patch that explains exactly what it does. Check out the in-depth support articles that explain the concepts behind Wire. Of course you are free to ask any question on our forum but also join our growing Slack community where you can get very quick feedback via chat. We look forward to you feedback on Wire!

Pricing
Resolume Wire for 1 computer is €399 Euro. Licenses are available in the shop.

Download
A free trial is available now on our downloads page so you can try Wire for as long as you like.

Thanks for your hard work!

As a friendly reminder (to anyone who reads this), the team’s pretty active on our Slack community as well, where you can ask questions and share patches too in the #wire channel.

Wow, we are really excitd about this! And judging from the past, this coming from Resolume, this will actually work just fine and reliably! Thank you!

Any plans on adding 3D functionality in there? Loading OBJs, materials, Cameras, Animation, etc?

I’ve been crying quiet tears for Quartz Composer. Haven’t yet tried Wire but sounds like I will be immediately in love as one would expect from a proper rebound relationship. Looks amazing! Thanks Resolume!

So, Wire will be included for free in a regular arena license?

This has me really excited! And as soon as I climb out of my mountain of debt and can afford to mess with Wire, it’s on! The post says free trial? Maybe I missed how long trial lasts? 30 days?

Wire licensing is similar to Arena.
Wire runs with watermark until registered, every feature works, except patch compiling.
There is no limit on how long you can use it with watermark.

Nice keen to dig into this and see how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Would be super nice down the road to see Touch Engine or Notch block playback support inside Wire, But it looks pretty solid the way it is!

Did I just see a «Don’t SHAVE» dialog pop up sneakily instead of «Don’t Save» when switching scenes? if so that is brilliant as it didn’t pop up again when I tried to recreate it.

It’s pretty intuitive once you figure out what some of the nodes are named (took me a while to find the «Pack» node was required to make vector 3s) but that’s probably from me jumping in without reading the manual.
The only quality of life improvement I’d love to see based on my quick noodling around, is when you drag off an input/output to create a new node, that the text search also pops up along with the Node Library dialog. Kinda of like when we currently double click in the node graph.

Yeah, I guess that comes with learning any new language, we hope the tutorials and in-app documentation provide enough to find most of what you need.

Thanks for this excellent software!

I hope it will support in the future:
GTLF files exported from Blender
websocket protocol to be able to control the FloatIns from a web page

Opening up patch example to learn the specifics of a node is tedious. Is there a manual out documenting all the different nodes like a wiki page?

I thought the same way.
So I extracted and summarized the comment text of the node patch example.

I wanted a Japanese version of the document, so the automatic translation version is the default.
However, switching between EN / JP will also switch to the original text.
In addition, you can search by node name.
I hope it helps.

There is no wiki as there are simply too many nodes and changes to keep that up to date.

The Training Video’s take you through the most commonly used nodes: https://resolume.com/training/wire

After that there are articles on subjects such as oscillators, shapes, randomness, logic, math etc.. These articles explain the use of nearly all the nodes in those catagories: https://resolume.com/support?wire

let me know if you are missing any subject in general and I’ll see what I can do to add it.

Welcome to Resolume Wire

Wire is a modular node-based patching environment to create effects, mixers and video generators for Arena & Avenue.

The Friendly Patching Environment

With great power comes. a learning curve. But Wire is a friendly patching environment that is easy to learn. If you’re new to patching, Wire is a great app to start exploring. Our built-in suggestion system shows you which nodes can be connected to other nodes. It also includes documentation for each node, many example patches, in-depth articles, and video tutorials. With Wire we’re flattening the learning curve of patching.

Arena & Avenue Integration

Wire lets you create sources, effects and mixers to use in Arena & Avenue. Do as much intricate patching in Wire as you like. Expose the parameters you need to play the patch with Arena or Avenue and keep your live performance interface simple and clean.

Effects & Compositing

Wire lets you chain together combinations of effects and do advanced video compositing. Almost all video effects that come with Arena and Avenue are included. Wire them up to create effects impossible to build in Arena & Avenue and create exactly the look you want.

Play Video & Images

Load images and videos inside a Wire patch to do masking and compositing. Wire’s built-in video mixer works similar to the layers you know from Arena and Avenue. The result? Multi-channel video in one clip!

2D Shapes

Combine a circle and a chevron and you get ❤. Just like that. Wire includes a very powerful 2D shapes system that allows you to create 2D content in all kinds of weird and wonderful ways. Go from basic circles and rectangles to morphing blobs.

Render Text

EAT. SLEEP. RAVE. REPEAT. Render text in any font in any color. Zoom and animate fonts super fast and crisp & clear.

Instances

From one to many in a single click. Almost every node in Wire can be instanced, running multiple copies of itself. Send multiple values between nodes through multi-channel connections. You want not 1 but 10 circles? Just increase the instance count. Wire instancing will allow you to work with collections in a way that is intuitive and efficient.

Patterns

Position your instances into grids or circles or anything you like, then animate those positions to generate all kind of mesmerizing visuals.

Slices from Arena

Your chase for the perfect slice chaser is over: just build your own. Create slices in Arena’s Advanced Output and use Wire to scale and position your content, render slice outlines and animate at will.

Audio Visualizers

Make your visuals bounce to the music. In Wire you can get the full Audio FFT spectrum from Arena & Avenue to animate anything and everything. This way you can build your own audio visualizers.

MIDI & OSC

Wire can send and receive MIDI & OSC. Via these protocols you can control your patch with a lot more expression than just the mouse and keyboard. By sending out MIDI or OSC you can control other applications too.

Literally hundreds of great real-time VJ effects and generators have been created by the ISF community and most of these are shared online. Load an ISF shader in Wire so you can edit it and expose the parameters you want to see when using it in Arena & Avenue.

GPU Shaders

Is node patching too easy for you? Just write your own shaders via the ISF node and take your GPU to a whole new dimension.

Patch Compiling & Juicebar Distribution

Share you masterpiece with the VJ community. For easy distribution you can compile a patch with all its assets into one file. You decide if that patch is editable by the end-user (open source), or not (closed source). Closed source patches can be used in Avenue or Arena, but not modified in any way. Plus, you’re free to distribute and sell online. Do you want to make and sell Wire patches but not host your own website? Then consider distributing via Juicebar.

Introduction

Hi Wire!!

Welcome to Wire! Wire is our node based programming environment to accompany Resolume. Wire enables you to easily create new effects, sources and mixers for Resolume. Your Wire patches will integrate seamlessly into your Resolume workflow. After you have made the next best effect, you are free to share it with others or compile it and sell it on your own.

What is Wire?

Wire is essentially a programming language for visual design. Now, before all you VJ’s out there go mad because you think you are way too cool to code, don’t worry, Wire is easy. We designed Wire with our Resolume user base in mind. Wire is easy and accessible for anybody who can read from left to right and tie his shoelaces.

Wire works with nodes. These are little blocks of code that can be connected with wires. This is called patching. Patching is similar to those old telephone stations in the 1930’s. You are now the operator and instead of patching boring calls through, you are making wicked visuals.

This is a simple example of a patch, that recreates a Resolume workflow. We have an Texture In node that contains a the Wire logo. This image is patched into the Colorize node you know and love from Resolume. This would be similar to having an image in Resolume and applying the colorize effect to it.

Now this is something you can do in Resolume already, so why bother with Wire? The nifty thing about Wire is that you can modulate practically everything. You are working with data now. You are in the kingdom of the nerds now, you can make anything you want.

How to use Wire

Wire is made to work with Resolume, both Arena and Avenue are compatible with Wire from version 7.4 and up. For the best results, use the latest versions of both Wire and Resolume. But Wire can also be used as a stand alone application for doing installations and multi-media art pieces.

In Wire you make effects, sources and mixers that you use in your performances with Resolume. Wire gives you the tools to create a patch and run it in Resolume with interactive elements. You can create sliders, inputs, triggers in Wire that will show up in Resolume when using your latest creation. Wire supports OSC, MIDI as well as Slices and FFT-signals from Resolume. Wire is your workshop where you create your tools. Resolume is your performance tool that you use for your shows.

Here you can see a patch in Wire and it’s representation in Arena.

Juicebar.

Триал версию можно загрузить с офф. сайта resolume.

Fix List
Arena & Avenue 7.4.0 of course contain the full Wire integration but also fixes the following bugs and crashes.

User Interface

This article is here to help you understand the Wire interface. Most of the interface is very straightforward and easy to explore on your own, but there are a few nice tricks that we will teach here.

Welcome Screen

When you start Wire you will be warmly greeted by our welcome screen.

Under the Patches tab you can quickly jump into the latest patches you’ve worked on. Toggle between the clock and ABC symbol to display your last used patches or sort your collection alphabetically.

Что такое resolume wire. Смотреть фото Что такое resolume wire. Смотреть картинку Что такое resolume wire. Картинка про Что такое resolume wire. Фото Что такое resolume wire

Click on the Tutorial tab to browse through an ever growing list of tutorials. These tutorials cover everything from the basics to generating nuclear launch codes.

The Examples tab hides a slew of fully documented patches that do awesome stuff. This is a nice tool for learning Wire or to pick up some inspiration.

The Templates tab holds a few templates that set Wire up for making a Source, Mixer or Effect.

At the left bottom you can toggle the Welcome pop-up on or off. The welcome screen can always be accessed from the View menu, because you, you are always welcome.

Patch Navigation

Panning

The patch screen can be traversed by holding down the spacebar and click-dragging across the screen. The cursor will change into a hand, indicating that you are ready to pan. Alternatively you can press and hold the middle mouse button to pan.

Zooming

Creating

Nodes can be created in three different ways. The first method is to right click on an empty space and find the node you need. The second method is to double click on an empty space. This opens up a search bar that lets you search for a node. Nodes found this way have a description and an example patch attached to them. The last method is to click on the library tab and either search or scroll to the desired patch, then drag it into the patch.

Selecting

Nodes can be selected by clicking on them. Hold [CTRL] and click on another node to expand your selection. Click and drag on an empty space in the patch to draw a selection box to select multiple nodes.

Moving

Once a node is selected you can move it around by clicking and dragging the node. When you have selected multiple nodes you can right click them to align them to the left or the top.

Duplicating

Once a node is selected you can right click it and select duplicate to create a duplicate of the node. Alternatively you can press [CTRL, D] to create a duplicate, or hold [ALT] and drag out a duplicate.

Copying/Cutting/Pasting

Nodes can be copied, cutted and pasted in your patch or onto other patches. Right click the node and press copy, cut or paste. The shortcuts are [CTRL, C] for copy, [CTRL, X] for cut and [CTRL, V] for pasting.

You may notice the option “Copy For Sharing”. This is a way to share your patch with other people by means text. We’ll dive deeper into this feature in the Saving, Consolidating and Compiling article.

Another nifty trick is the Copy/Paste Settings function. This allows you to copy the settings from one node to another. Of Course the nodes have to be similar, but it is perfectly fine to copy the settings from a Sine Oscillator onto a Saw Oscillator.

Renaming

You may want to rename your nodes at some point. You can do this by double clicking its name. Alternatively you can change the name in the node panel after you selected the patch.

Note that the names of input nodes will also be displayed in Resolume when using the patch. For this reason it is best practice to use standard English words if you want to share your patch with others.

Что такое resolume wire. Смотреть фото Что такое resolume wire. Смотреть картинку Что такое resolume wire. Картинка про Что такое resolume wire. Фото Что такое resolume wire

Connecting

Nodes can be connected by clicking on an outlet and connecting it to an inlet. Wire always works from left to right. In some cases, feedback loops can be created, but that is beyond the scope of this article.

You can take the connection to an inlet and move it to another inlet by clicking it.

To disconnect a connection, right click on the wire and select disconnect. Alternatively you can press [DEL] or [BACKSPACE] to remove the connection.

Deleting

It is impossible to delete a node. Deleting nodes is not permanent enough. That’s why in Wire, you destroy nodes instead. Right click the node and click on destroy. Alternatively press [DEL] or [BACKSPACE] to initiate node destruction.

Undo/Redo

Monitor

In the bottom right corner of your screen you will find the monitor. By default this will show the output of the currently selected node. This allows you to preview every step in your signal without having to bypass nodes.

Below the monitor the name of the node will be displayed. This is the name of the node that is described in the library. Meaning that even though you might have renamed your node, the original name can always be found here.

Left of the name you’ll find the pin button. When in pinned mode the current node will be locked to the monitor. No matter what you do or where you click, this node will always be in the preview screen. A quick way to pin/unpin a node is by holding [ALT] while clicking it.

Что такое resolume wire. Смотреть фото Что такое resolume wire. Смотреть картинку Что такое resolume wire. Картинка про Что такое resolume wire. Фото Что такое resolume wireThe Texture Out node is pinned to the preview screen.

Patch Panel

The patch panels gives you all the information about your patch in general.

Here you can give your patch a name and a description. This is the name and description that Arena/Avenue will use. Category is an important one, here you select how Arena/Avenue should interpret your patch. You can choose between source, effect or mixer. If needed, you can adjust the resolution and texture bit depth of the patch.

Below that you can fill in your credentials. This will make sure you get famous.

Lastly there is your license information. This will be covered in more detail in the Saving, Consolidating and Compiling article.

Что такое resolume wire. Смотреть фото Что такое resolume wire. Смотреть картинку Что такое resolume wire. Картинка про Что такое resolume wire. Фото Что такое resolume wire

Node Panel

After you select a node, the node panel will update to display the unique attributes of that node. Keep in mind that each node is unique and will have different settings in the panel

Here you can change the name of the node and adjust inlet values manually.
The color of the node can also be adjusted here.

Under attributes you can often adjust the data input and output types and change the amount of instances. Data types will be covered in the Data Types article and Instancing also has its own article.

At the bottom of the panel you will find a link to an example that explains the node in more detail.

Library

The library is the collection of all the nodes in Wire. Here you can either search for the node you need. Create the node by either double clicking it or dragging it onto the patch.

Что такое resolume wire. Смотреть фото Что такое resolume wire. Смотреть картинку Что такое resolume wire. Картинка про Что такое resolume wire. Фото Что такое resolume wire

Resources

Resources are external files used in your patch. These can be clips, images or ISF files. The resource tab is here to give you an overview of all resources used in your patch.

Что такое resolume wire. Смотреть фото Что такое resolume wire. Смотреть картинку Что такое resolume wire. Картинка про Что такое resolume wire. Фото Что такое resolume wire

Clearing unused resources

If you have any resources that are not used in the patch, you can remove them manually in the Resources tab or go to the Wire tab and click “Clear Unused Resources”. This will get rid of all the files that are not being used.

Consolidation

When saving a patch that has resources, it might be useful to consolidate it instead. This will copy all the used resources to the folder where you patch is saved. For more information on consolidation check the Saving, Consolidating and Compiling article.

This is where all the error messages show up. A clear Log is a happy Log. You can also use the Print node to send information to the Log.

Dashboard

The Dashboard tab is the one-tab-stop for controlling all your inputs as well as ordering them as you see fit.

The order of the inputs is also the order that Arena/Avenue will pick up when you run your patch there. Inputs can be moved by dragging and dropping the name of the parameter.

Note that to create an organized and user-friendly patch you should always rename your inputs. You can rename nodes by either double clicking the name of the node (not in the dashboard, but the node self) or right clicking the node and selecting rename in the drop-down menu.
