Великие Равнины (англ. Great Plains ) — предгорное плато в США и Канаде, к востоку от Скалистых гор. Высота порядка 700—1800 м над уровнем моря. Длина около 3600 км, ширина от 500 до 800 км.
Содержание
География
Великие Равнины с севера на юг делятся на такие основные зоны, как плато Миссури, центральные Высокие равнины, плато Льяно-Эстакадо и Эдуардс. В ряде районов наблюдается эрозия горных пород (это так называемые плохие земли, «бедлендз»). На юге переходят в Мексиканское нагорье.
Климат в пределах равнин континентальный. Растительность степная (прерии).
Экономика
На территории плато развито производство пшеницы (Великие Равнины часто называют «Всемирной житницей»), пастбищное скотоводство. США начали осваивать эту область после Луизианской покупки (1803). Ещё в 1820 г. исследователи признавали эти земли непригодными для жизни.
