Flag of Russia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Trikolor
Tricolour
It remained in use until 1858, when the first official flag of the Russian Empire was decreed by Alexander II, which was a tricolor consisting of three horizontal fields: black on the top, yellow in the middle, and white on the bottom. A decree in 1896 reinstated the white, blue, and red tricolor as the official flag of the Russian Empire until the Revolution of 1917.
Following the creation of the Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic after the Bolshevik Revolution, the Russian tricolor was abolished, and its usage was preserved by the White Movement and the Russian state during the Russian Civil War. During the Soviet Union’s existence, the country used the red flag with a golden hammer and sickle and a golden bordered red star on top while the Russian SFSR (a constituent republic of the USSR) used a defaced variant with a vertical blue bar at the hoist.
During the dissolution of the Soviet Union, after the 1991 August Coup, the Russian SFSR adopted a new flag design that looked almost identical to the pre-revolutionary tricolour that had been abolished in 1917. The ratio of the new flag was 1:2, and the flag colors consisted of white on the top, azure in the middle, and scarlet on the bottom. The flag design remained the same until 1993, when the original Russian tricolour was fully restored as the current flag after the 1993 Russian constitutional crisis.

One flag, several interpretations
There are many theories about the origin of the three colours. One popular theory suggests that the order in which the colours were placed reflected the Russian social system while under the monarchy: white represents God, blue represents the Tsar and red represents the people.
According to another version, it originated from the coat of arms of the Grand Duchy of Moscow, St. Georges all dressed in his silver armour and mounted a white horse, with a blue cape hanging on his shoulders and holding a blue shield is riding on a red field.
Some says that these three colours are associated with the robes of the Virgin Mary, the holy protectress of Russia.
Another interpretation associates white with the bright future, blue with clouded present and red with bloody past.

Tsar Peter I the Great had ambitious plans to transform Russia into a modern state. Building a Russian navy was part of that program, and he visited the Netherlands to learn about the most advanced shipbuilding concepts and techniques. The flag he chose for merchant ships in 1699 reflected the Dutch red-white-blue tricolour: the Russian flag differed only in having the stripes arranged white-blue-red. These colours are sometimes given traditional Russian symbolismβone such interpretation recalls the red shield of the Grand Principality of Moscow, with its representation of St. George cloaked in blue and mounted on a white horse. Reference was also made to the quartered flag of white and red with a blue cross that had been flown on the 1667 Oryol, the first Russian warship. The new flag became very popular, so much so that during the 19th century the black-orange-white tricolour that the tsars attempted to impose as a national flag on land completely failed and eventually was abandoned. Just after the beginning of World War I, the flag was modified by the addition of a golden yellow canton bearing the imperial arms, a symbol of solidarity between the ruling dynasty and the Russian people.
In the Soviet era all Russian flags were based on the Red Banner, which had its roots in the French Revolution and, possibly, even earlier peasant uprisings. After the formation of the Soviet Union, the official state flag contained a gold hammer, sickle, and gold-bordered red star in the upper hoist corner. When the Soviet Union dissolved, its symbols were replaced. The non-Russian territories acquired by tsars and communist leaders became independent, and the Russian Federation that remained readopted the white-blue-red Russian national flag. It became official on August 21, 1991, four months before the formal dissolution of the Soviet Union. It is now widely accepted, although a few groups favour use of the Red Banner or even adoption of the black-orange-white tricolour.

State Symbols of Russia
The state symbols of Russia are the Russian flag, the hymn of Russia and the coat of arms (Π³Π΅ΡΠ±).
The State Russian flag is three-coloured. It has three horizontal stripes: white, blue and red. The white stripe stands for the earth, the blue one stands for the sky, and the red one stands for liberty.
The national emblem of Russia is the double-headed eagle. It is the most ancient symbol of Russia. Originally, it was one of the symbols of the Byzantine Empire. It was introduced in Russia in 1497 by Tsar Ivan III after he had married the niece of the last Byzantine Emperor, Sophia.
The Russian coat of arms consists of the double-headed eagle which has the figure of a horse rider who spears a viper upon its breast.
Another symbol of Russia is Spasskaya Tower, because the Kremlin clock is on it.
Text about Russiaβs Political System
The official name of the country is the Russian Federation or the RF.
Under the Constitution of 1993 Russia is a Presidential Republic. It is headed by the President who is elected for a four-year term. The President is commanderβinβchef of the armed forces, he makes treaties, enforces laws, appoints the Prime Minister, cabinet members, and key judges. The first Russian president was Boris Eltsin (since 1991).
The Russian government consists of three branches:
(1) Legislative (Federal Assembly, which consists of Federation Council (upper house) and State Duma (lower house). The Federal Council is not elected. It is formed of the heads of the regions;
(2) Executive (President and his cabinet, prime minister);
(3) Judicial (the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court, and regional courts).
The State Duma is a lower house of Federal Assembly, which consists also of an upper house-Federation Council. The members of State Duma are elected by popular vote ( Π³ΠΎΠ»ΠΎΡΠ°ΠΌΠΈ ΠΈΠ·Π±ΠΈΡΠ°ΡΠ΅Π»Π΅ΠΉ) for a four year period.
Russia is a democratic society. Its citizens have many freedoms, among them freedom of speech, religion and the press.
The Russian language is the official language, but not the only language which people speak in Russia. Members of more than 60 other ethnic groups who live in Russia speak their own languages.
The great majority of the population of Russia is Russians. Russia is inhabited by sixty other nationalities.
